For most of my life, I’ve been fascinated by performance, recovery and the limits of what the human body can achieve. Growing up, sport was a huge part of my identity. I played competitive football and rugby throughout school and university before transitioning into boxing in my twenties and thirties. I loved the discipline, the challenge and the physical demands that came with pushing my body to perform.
For many years, recovery wasn’t something I thought much about. I’d train hard, compete, sleep, and do it all again the next day. My body seemed capable of absorbing almost anything I threw at it. Then something changed. As I moved through my thirties, I began noticing subtle but undeniable differences. Training sessions that I would once bounce back from started leaving me sore for days. Recovery became slower. Energy levels weren’t quite as consistent. Sleep wasn’t as restorative. Nothing dramatic happened overnight, but I could feel that my body wasn’t operating quite as efficiently as it once had. At the time, I assumed this was simply part of getting older. What I didn’t realise was that I was beginning to experience the difference between chronological age and biological age.
The Age That Really Matters
Chronological age is straightforward. It’s the number of years that have passed since you were born. Biological age is far more interesting. Biological age refers to how well your body is functioning at a cellular and molecular level. It reflects the cumulative impact of lifestyle, stress, nutrition, exercise, sleep and environmental factors on the ageing process. Two people can both be 40 years old chronologically yet have dramatically different biological ages. One may possess the cellular resilience, energy production and recovery capacity of someone much younger, while the other may display signs of accelerated ageing.
Increasingly, longevity researchers believe biological age is a far more meaningful predictor of healthspan than chronological age alone. This concept completely changed the way I thought about ageing. Instead of asking, “How old am I?” I started asking, “How well are my cells functioning?
The NAD+ Connection
My research led me to one molecule that appears repeatedly throughout the scientific literature on ageing: NAD+ (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide). NAD+ is found in every cell in the body and plays a critical role in cellular energy production. It helps power the mitochondria, often referred to as the “powerhouses” of our cells, which convert nutrients into usable energy.
Beyond energy production, NAD+ is involved in DNA repair, cellular resilience and the activation of proteins called sirtuins, which have been heavily studied for their role in healthy ageing and longevity. The challenge is that NAD+ levels naturally decline as we age. Research suggests that by middle age, NAD+ levels can be significantly lower than they were in our youth. As levels decline, cellular efficiency can begin to decline too, potentially affecting energy, recovery, resilience and overall vitality. For someone who had spent decades demanding a lot from their body, this was a fascinating discovery. What if some of the changes I was experiencing weren’t simply because I was older? What if they were partly related to declining cellular energy production?

Discovering NMN, TMG and Trans-Resveratrol
This question led me to NMN (Nicotinamide Mononucleotide), one of the most widely discussed compounds in longevity science. NMN is a direct precursor to NAD+, meaning it helps support the body’s natural production of this critical molecule. Alongside NMN, I discovered two other compounds that are increasingly being used as part of a longevity-focused supplementation strategy: TMG (Trimethylglycine) and Trans-Resveratrol.
